The top-level boot_targets (uImage and uImage.*) should be phony
targets. They just let Kbuild descend into arch/arc/boot/ and create
files there.
If a file exists in the top directory with the same name, the boot
image will not be created.
You can confirm it by the following steps:
$ export CROSS_COMPILE=<your-arc-compiler-prefix>
$ make -s ARCH=arc defconfig all # vmlinux will be built
$ touch uImage.gz
$ make ARCH=arc uImage.gz
CALL scripts/atomic/check-atomics.sh

Specify the targets as PHONY to fix this.

LLVM-built Linux triggered a boot hangup with KASLR enabled.
arch/mips/kernel/relocate.c:get_random_boot() uses linux_banner,
which is a string constant, as a random seed, but accesses it
as an array of unsigned long (in rotate_xor()).
When the address of linux_banner is not aligned to sizeof(long),
such access emits unaligned access exception and hangs the kernel.
Use PTR_ALIGN() to align input address to sizeof(long) and also
align down the input length to prevent possible access-beyond-end.

The compressed payload is not necesarily 4-byte aligned, at least when
compiling with Clang. In that case, the 4-byte value appended to the
compressed payload that corresponds to the uncompressed kernel image
size must be read using get_unaligned_le32().
This fixes Clang-built kernels not booting on MIPS (tested on a Ingenic
JZ4770 board).

We reset the guest's view of PMCR_EL0 unconditionally, based on
the host's view of this register. It is however legal for an
implementation not to provide any PMU, resulting in an UNDEF.
The obvious fix is to skip the reset of this shadow register
when no PMU is available, sidestepping the issue entirely.
If no PMU is available, the guest is not able to request
a virtual PMU anyway, so not doing nothing is the right thing
to do!
It is unlikely that this bug can hit any HW implementation
though, as they all provide a PMU. It has been found using nested
virt with the host KVM not implementing the PMU itself.

On the GTA04A5 od->_driver_status was not set to BUS_NOTIFY_BIND_DRIVER
during probe of the second mmc used for wifi. Therefore
omap_device_late_idle idled the device during probing causing oopses when
accessing the registers.
It was not set because od->_state was set to OMAP_DEVICE_STATE_IDLE
in the notifier callback. Therefore set od->_driver_status also in that
case.
This came apparent after commit 21b2cec61c ("mmc: Set
PROBE_PREFER_ASYNCHRONOUS for drivers that existed in v4.4") causing this
oops:

The placeholder for instruction selection should use the second
argument's operand, which is %1, not %0. This could generate incorrect
assembly code if the memory addressing of operand %0 is a different
form from that of operand %1.
Also remove the %Un placeholder because having %Un placeholders
for two operands which are based on the same local var (ptep) doesn't
make much sense. By the way, it doesn't change the current behaviour
because "<>" constraint is missing for the associated "=m".

In mtrr_type_lookup(), if the input memory address region is not in the
MTRR, over 4GB, and not over the top of memory, a write-back attribute
is returned. These condition checks are for ensuring the input memory
address region is actually mapped to the physical memory.
However, if the end address is just aligned with the top of memory,
the condition check treats the address is over the top of memory, and
write-back attribute is not returned.
And this hits in a real use case with NVDIMM: the nd_pmem module tries
to map NVDIMMs as cacheable memories when NVDIMMs are connected. If a
NVDIMM is the last of the DIMMs, the performance of this NVDIMM becomes
very low since it is aligned with the top of memory and its memory type
is uncached-minus.
Move the input end address change to inclusive up into
mtrr_type_lookup(), before checking for the top of memory in either
mtrr_type_lookup_{variable,fixed}() helpers.

introduced a new location where a pmd was released, but neglected to
run the pmd page destructor. In fact, this happened previously for a
different pmd release path and was fixed by commit:
c283610e44 ("x86, mm: do not leak page->ptl for pmd page tables").
This issue was hidden until recently because the failure mode is silent,
but commit:

Given this is a repeat occurrence it seemed prudent to look for other
places where this destructor might be missing and whether a better
helper is needed. try_to_free_pmd_page() looks like a candidate, but
testing with setting up and tearing down pmd mappings via the dax unit
tests is thus far not triggering the failure.
As for a better helper pmd_free() is close, but it is a messy fit
due to requiring an @mm arg. Also, ___pmd_free_tlb() wants to call
paravirt_tlb_remove_table() instead of free_page(), so open-coded
pgtable_pmd_page_dtor() seems the best way forward for now.

port helper
This bug is prehistoric - it predates switching to git. The "fixes"
header here is really just to mark all the versions we would like this to
apply to which is "Anything from the Cretaceous period onwards".

Fix to restore BTF if single-stepping causes a page fault and
it is cancelled.
Usually the BTF flag was restored when the single stepping is done
(in resume_execution()). However, if a page fault happens on the
single stepping instruction, the fault handler is invoked and
the single stepping is cancelled. Thus, the BTF flag is not
restored.

There are three ways pseries_suspend_begin() can be reached:
1. When "mem" is written to /sys/power/state:
kobj_attr_store()
-> state_store()
-> pm_suspend()
-> suspend_devices_and_enter()
-> pseries_suspend_begin()
This never works because there is no way to supply a valid stream id
using this interface, and H_VASI_STATE is called with a stream id of
zero. So this call path is useless at best.
2. When a stream id is written to /sys/devices/system/power/hibernate.
pseries_suspend_begin() is polled directly from store_hibernate()
until the stream is in the "Suspending" state (i.e. the platform is
ready for the OS to suspend execution):
dev_attr_store()
-> store_hibernate()
-> pseries_suspend_begin()
3. When a stream id is written to /sys/devices/system/power/hibernate
(continued). After #2, pseries_suspend_begin() is called once again
from the pm core:
dev_attr_store()
-> store_hibernate()
-> pm_suspend()
-> suspend_devices_and_enter()
-> pseries_suspend_begin()
This is redundant because the VASI suspend state is already known to
be Suspending.
The begin() callback of platform_suspend_ops is optional, so we can
simply remove that assignment with no loss of function.

On 8xx, we get the following features:

This is not correct. As CONFIG_PPC_8xx is mutually exclusive with all
other configurations, the three lines should be equal.
The problem is due to CPU_FTRS_GENERIC_32 which is taken when
CONFIG_BOOK3S_32 is NOT selected. This CPU_FTRS_GENERIC_32 is
pointless because there is no generic configuration supporting
all 32 bits but book3s/32.
Remove this pointless generic features definition to unbreak the
calculation of 'possible' features and 'always' features.

When BCM47XX_BCMA is enabled and BCMA_DRIVER_PCI is disabled, it results

It's not possible to reboot or poweroff Exynos7420 using PSCI. Instead
we need to use syscon reboot/poweroff drivers, like it's done for other
Exynos SoCs. This was confirmed by checking vendor source and testing it
on Samsung Galaxy S6 device based on this SoC.
To be able to use custom restart/poweroff handlers instead of PSCI
functions, we need to correct psci compatible. This also requires us to
provide function ids for CPU_ON and CPU_OFF.

When running in BE mode on LPAE hardware with a PA-to-VA translation
that exceeds 4 GB, we patch bits 39:32 of the offset into the wrong
byte of the opcode. So fix that, by rotating the offset in r0 to the
right by 8 bits, which will put the 8-bit immediate in bits 31:24.
Note that this will also move bit #22 in its correct place when
applying the rotation to the constant #0x400000.

On Odroid XU LDO12 and LDO15 supplies the power to USB 3.0 blocks but
the GPK GPIO pins are supplied by LDO7 (VDDQ_LCD). LDO7 also supplies
GPJ GPIO pins.
The Exynos pinctrl driver does not take any supplies, so to have entire
GPIO block always available, make the regulator always on.

The VBUS control (PWREN) and over-current pins of USB 3.0 DWC3
controllers are on Exynos5410 regular GPIOs. This is different than for
example on Exynos5422 where these are special ETC pins with proper reset
values (pulls, functions).
Therefore these pins should be configured to enable proper USB 3.0
peripheral and host modes. This also fixes over-current warning:

To start stack unwinding (SP, PC and BLINK) are needed. When the
explicit execution context (pt_regs etc) is not available, unwinder
assumes the task is sleeping (in __switch_to()) and fetches SP and BLINK
from kernel mode stack.
But this assumption is not true, specially in a SMP system, when top
runs on 1 core, there may be active running processes on all cores.
So when unwinding non courrent tasks, ensure they are NOT running.
And while at it, handle the self unwinding case explicitly.
This came out of investigation of a customer reported hang with
rcutorture+top

When spectre_v2_user={seccomp,prctl},ibpb is specified on the command
line, IBPB is force-enabled and STIPB is conditionally-enabled (or not
available).
However, since
21998a3515 ("x86/speculation: Avoid force-disabling IBPB based on STIBP and enhanced IBRS.")
the spectre_v2_user_ibpb variable is set to SPECTRE_V2_USER_{PRCTL,SECCOMP}
instead of SPECTRE_V2_USER_STRICT, which is the actual behaviour.
Because the issuing of IBPB relies on the switch_mm_*_ibpb static
branches, the mitigations behave as expected.
Since
1978b3a53a ("x86/speculation: Allow IBPB to be conditionally enabled on CPUs with always-on STIBP")
this discrepency caused the misreporting of IB speculation via prctl().
On CPUs with STIBP always-on and spectre_v2_user=seccomp,ibpb,
prctl(PR_GET_SPECULATION_CTRL) would return PR_SPEC_PRCTL |
PR_SPEC_ENABLE instead of PR_SPEC_DISABLE since both IBPB and STIPB are
always on. It also allowed prctl(PR_SET_SPECULATION_CTRL) to set the IB
speculation mode, even though the flag is ignored.
Similarly, for CPUs without SMT, prctl(PR_GET_SPECULATION_CTRL) should
also return PR_SPEC_DISABLE since IBPB is always on and STIBP is not
available.

The secondary CPUs are not activated with the nosmt mitigations and only
the primary thread on each CPU core is used. In this situation,
xen_hvm_smp_prepare_cpus(), and more importantly xen_init_lock_cpu(), is
not called, so the lock_kicker_irq is not initialized for the secondary
CPUs. Let's fix this by exiting early in xen_uninit_lock_cpu() if the
irq is not set to avoid the warning from above for each secondary CPU.

pte_accessible() is used by ptep_clear_flush() to figure out whether TLB
invalidation is necessary when unmapping pages for reclaim. Although our
implementation is correct according to the architecture, returning true
only for valid, young ptes in the absence of racing page-table
modifications, this is in fact flawed due to lazy invalidation of old
ptes in ptep_clear_flush_young() where we elide the expensive DSB
instruction for completing the TLB invalidation.
Rather than penalise the aging path, adjust pte_accessible() to return
true for any valid pte, even if the access flag is cleared.

Currently, scan_microcode() leverages microcode_matches() to check
if the microcode matches the CPU by comparing the family and model.
However, the processor stepping and flags of the microcode signature
should also be considered when saving a microcode patch for early
update.
Use find_matching_signature() in scan_microcode() and get rid of the
now-unused microcode_matches() which is a good cleanup in itself.
Complete the verification of the patch being saved for early loading in
save_microcode_patch() directly. This needs to be done there too because
save_mc_for_early() will call save_microcode_patch() too.
The second reason why this needs to be done is because the loader still
tries to support, at least hypothetically, mixed-steppings systems and
thus adds all patches to the cache that belong to the same CPU model
albeit with different steppings.

This file is installed by the s390 CPU Measurement sampling
facility device driver to export supported minimum and
maximum sample buffer sizes.
This file is read by lscpumf tool to display the details
of the device driver capabilities. The lscpumf tool might
be invoked by a non-root user. In this case it does not
print anything because the file contents can not be read.
Fix this by allowing read access for all users. Reading
the file contents is ok, changing the file contents is
left to the root user only.

Although cache alias management calls set up and tear down TLB entries
and fast_second_level_miss is able to restore TLB entry should it be
evicted they absolutely cannot preempt each other because they use the
same TLBTEMP area for different purposes.
Disable preemption around all cache alias management calls to enforce
that.

The SPI chip selects are represented as:
cs-gpios = <&gpio4 11 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>, <&gpio4 13 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;
, which means that they are used in GPIO function instead of native
SPI mode.
Fix the IOMUX for the chip select 1 to use GPIO4_13 instead of
the native CSPI_SSI function.

The kernel expects pte_young() to work regardless of CONFIG_SWAP.
Make sure a minor fault is taken to set _PAGE_ACCESSED when it
is not already set, regardless of the selection of CONFIG_SWAP.
This adds at least 3 instructions to the TLB miss exception
handlers fast path. Following patch will reduce this overhead.
Also update the rotation instruction to the correct number of bits
to reflect all changes done to _PAGE_ACCESSED over time.

IBM Power9 processors can speculatively operate on data in the L1 cache before
it has been completely validated, via a way-prediction mechanism. It is not possible
for an attacker to determine the contents of impermissible memory using this method,
since these systems implement a combination of hardware and software security measures
to prevent scenarios where protected data could be leaked.
However these measures don't address the scenario where an attacker induces
the operating system to speculatively execute instructions using data that the
attacker controls. This can be used for example to speculatively bypass "kernel
user access prevention" techniques, as discovered by Anthony Steinhauser of
Google's Safeside Project. This is not an attack by itself, but there is a possibility
it could be used in conjunction with side-channels or other weaknesses in the
privileged code to construct an attack.
This issue can be mitigated by flushing the L1 cache between privilege boundaries
of concern. This patch flushes the L1 cache after user accesses.
This is part of the fix for CVE-2020-4788.

get/put_user() can be called with nontrivial arguments. fs/proc/page.c
has a good example:
if (put_user(stable_page_flags(ppage), out)) {
stable_page_flags() is quite a lot of code, including spin locks in
the page allocator.
Ensure these arguments are evaluated before user access is allowed.
This improves security by reducing code with access to userspace, but
it also fixes a PREEMPT bug with KUAP on powerpc/64s:
stable_page_flags() is currently called with AMR set to allow writes,
it ends up calling spin_unlock(), which can call preempt_schedule. But
the task switch code can not be called with AMR set (it relies on
interrupts saving the register), so this blows up.
It's fine if the code inside allow_user_access() is preemptible,
because a timer or IPI will save the AMR, but it's not okay to
explicitly cause a reschedule.

The KUAP implementation adds calls in clear_user() to enable and
disable access to userspace memory. However, it doesn't add these to
__clear_user(), which is used in the ptrace regset code.
As there's only one direct user of __clear_user() (the regset code),
and the time taken to set the AMR for KUAP purposes is going to
dominate the cost of a quick access_ok(), there's not much point
having a separate path.
Rename __clear_user() to __arch_clear_user(), and make __clear_user()
just call clear_user().
