With commit896fbe20b4("printk: use the lockless ringbuffer"), printk() started silently dropping messages without text because such records are not supported by the new printk ringbuffer. Add support for such records. Currently dataless records are denoted by INVALID_LPOS in order to recognize failed prb_reserve() calls. Change the ringbuffer to instead use two different identifiers (FAILED_LPOS and NO_LPOS) to distinguish between failed prb_reserve() records and successful dataless records, respectively. Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
