688abddcfa BACKPORT: FROMGIT: kasan, vmalloc, arm64: mark vmalloc mappings as pgprot_tagged
(Backport: conflicts due to adjacent lines changed;
 add pgtable.h include to arch/arm64/include/asm/vmalloc.h.)

HW_TAGS KASAN relies on ARM Memory Tagging Extension (MTE).  With MTE, a
memory region must be mapped as MT_NORMAL_TAGGED to allow setting memory
tags via MTE-specific instructions.

Add proper protection bits to vmalloc() allocations.  These allocations
are always backed by page_alloc pages, so the tags will actually be
getting set on the corresponding physical memory.

ecf1dc6838 FROMGIT: kasan, vmalloc: add vmalloc tagging for SW_TAGS
Add vmalloc tagging support to SW_TAGS KASAN.

- __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() now assigns a random pointer tag, poisons
  the virtual mapping accordingly, and embeds the tag into the returned
  pointer.

- __get_vm_area_node() (used by vmalloc() and vmap()) and
  pcpu_get_vm_areas() save the tagged pointer into vm_struct->addr
  (note: not into vmap_area->addr). This requires putting
  kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() after setup_vmalloc_vm[_locked]();
  otherwise the latter will overwrite the tagged pointer.
  The tagged pointer then is naturally propagateed to vmalloc()
  and vmap().

- vm_map_ram() returns the tagged pointer directly.

As a result of this change, vm_struct->addr is now tagged.

Enabling KASAN_VMALLOC with SW_TAGS is not yet allowed.

064f89156f FROMGIT: kasan, arm64: reset pointer tags of vmapped stacks
Once tag-based KASAN modes start tagging vmalloc() allocations, kernel
stacks start getting tagged if CONFIG_VMAP_STACK is enabled.

Reset the tag of kernel stack pointers after allocation in
arch_alloc_vmap_stack().

For SW_TAGS KASAN, when CONFIG_KASAN_STACK is enabled, the instrumentation
can't handle the SP register being tagged.

For HW_TAGS KASAN, there's no instrumentation-related issues.  However,
the impact of having a tagged SP register needs to be properly evaluated,
so keep it non-tagged for now.

Note, that the memory for the stack allocation still gets tagged to catch
vmalloc-into-stack out-of-bounds accesses.

cdb4c18935 FROMLIST: kasan, fork: reset pointer tags of vmapped stacks
[Combines a FROMGIT patch and a FROMLIST fix for it.]

Once tag-based KASAN modes start tagging vmalloc() allocations, kernel

25d90a2ba0 FROMGIT: kasan, vmalloc: reset tags in vmalloc functions
In preparation for adding vmalloc support to SW/HW_TAGS KASAN, reset
pointer tags in functions that use pointer values in range checks.

vread() is a special case here.  Despite the untagging of the addr pointer
in its prologue, the accesses performed by vread() are checked.

Instead of accessing the virtual mappings though addr directly, vread()
recovers the physical address via page_address(vmalloc_to_page()) and
acceses that.  And as page_address() recovers the pointer tag, the
accesses get checked.

Add wrappers around functions that [un]poison memory for vmalloc
allocations.  These functions will be used by HW_TAGS KASAN and therefore
need to be disabled when kasan=off command line argument is provided.

This patch does no functional changes for software KASAN modes.

e8c3e6f87a BACKPORT: FROMGIT: kasan: reorder vmalloc hooks
(Backport: drop kasan_populate_early_vm_area_shadow changes, as
 3252b1d830 is not backported.)

Group functions that [de]populate shadow memory for vmalloc.  Group
functions that [un]poison memory for vmalloc.

This patch does no functional changes but prepares KASAN code for adding
vmalloc support to HW_TAGS KASAN.

deb5ba5311 FROMGIT: kasan, x86, arm64, s390: rename functions for modules shadow
Rename kasan_free_shadow to kasan_free_module_shadow and
kasan_module_alloc to kasan_alloc_module_shadow.

These functions are used to allocate/free shadow memory for kernel modules
when KASAN_VMALLOC is not enabled.  The new names better reflect their
purpose.

Also reword the comment next to their declaration to improve clarity.

c0983b3ca7 FROMGIT: kasan: define KASAN_VMALLOC_INVALID for SW_TAGS
In preparation for adding vmalloc support to SW_TAGS KASAN, provide a
KASAN_VMALLOC_INVALID definition for it.

HW_TAGS KASAN won't be using this value, as it falls back onto page_alloc
for poisoning freed vmalloc() memory.

c7b815fbef FROMGIT: kasan: clean up metadata byte definitions
Most of the metadata byte values are only used for Generic KASAN.

Remove KASAN_KMALLOC_FREETRACK definition for !CONFIG_KASAN_GENERIC case,
and put it along with other metadata values for the Generic mode under a
corresponding ifdef.

8a710d3f68 FROMGIT: kasan, page_alloc: rework kasan_unpoison_pages call site
Rework the checks around kasan_unpoison_pages() call in post_alloc_hook().

The logical condition for calling this function is:

- If a software KASAN mode is enabled, we need to mark shadow memory.
- Otherwise, HW_TAGS KASAN is enabled, and it only makes sense to
  set tags if they haven't already been cleared by tag_clear_highpage(),
  which is indicated by init_tags.

This patch concludes the changes for post_alloc_hook().

7c2ba461d9 FROMGIT: kasan, page_alloc: move SetPageSkipKASanPoison in post_alloc_hook
Pull the SetPageSkipKASanPoison() call in post_alloc_hook() out of the big
if clause for better code readability.  This also allows for more
simplifications in the following patches.

Also turn the kasan_has_integrated_init() check into the proper
kasan_hw_tags_enabled() one.  These checks evaluate to the same value, but
logically skipping kasan poisoning has nothing to do with integrated init.

Currently, the code responsible for initializing and poisoning memory in
post_alloc_hook() is scattered across two locations: kasan_alloc_pages()
hook for HW_TAGS KASAN and post_alloc_hook() itself.  This is confusing.

This and a few following patches combine the code from these two
locations.  Along the way, these patches do a step-by-step restructure the
many performed checks to make them easier to follow.

Replace the only caller of kasan_alloc_pages() with its implementation.

As kasan_has_integrated_init() is only true when CONFIG_KASAN_HW_TAGS is
enabled, moving the code does no functional changes.

Also move init and init_tags variables definitions out of
kasan_has_integrated_init() clause in post_alloc_hook(), as they have the
same values regardless of what the if condition evaluates to.

This patch is not useful by itself but makes the simplifications in the
following patches easier to follow.

Since commit 7a3b835371 ("kasan: use separate (un)poison implementation
for integrated init"), when all init, kasan_has_integrated_init(), and
skip_kasan_poison are true, free_pages_prepare() doesn't initialize the
page.  This is wrong.

Fix it by remembering whether kasan_poison_pages() performed
initialization, and call kernel_init_free_pages() if it didn't.

Reordering kasan_poison_pages() and kernel_init_free_pages() is OK, since
kernel_init_free_pages() can handle poisoned memory.

Currently, kernel_init_free_pages() serves two purposes: it either only
zeroes memory or zeroes both memory and memory tags via a different code
path.  As this function has only two callers, each using only one code
path, this behaviour is confusing.

Pull the code that zeroes both memory and tags out of
kernel_init_free_pages().

As a result of this change, the code in free_pages_prepare() starts to
look complicated, but this is improved in the few following patches.
Those improvements are not integrated into this patch to make diffs easier
to read.

This patch does no functional changes.

Patch series "kasan, vmalloc, arm64: add vmalloc tagging support for SW/HW_TAGS", v6.

This patchset adds vmalloc tagging support for SW_TAGS and HW_TAGS
KASAN modes.

About half of patches are cleanups I went for along the way.  None of them
seem to be important enough to go through stable, so I decided not to
split them out into separate patches/series.

The patchset is partially based on an early version of the HW_TAGS
patchset by Vincenzo that had vmalloc support.  Thus, I added a
Co-developed-by tag into a few patches.

SW_TAGS vmalloc tagging support is straightforward.  It reuses all of the
generic KASAN machinery, but uses shadow memory to store tags instead of
magic values.  Naturally, vmalloc tagging requires adding a few
kasan_reset_tag() annotations to the vmalloc code.

HW_TAGS vmalloc tagging support stands out.  HW_TAGS KASAN is based on Arm
MTE, which can only assigns tags to physical memory.  As a result, HW_TAGS
KASAN only tags vmalloc() allocations, which are backed by page_alloc
memory.  It ignores vmap() and others.

This patch (of 39):

Currently, should_skip_kasan_poison() has two definitions: one for when
CONFIG_DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT is enabled, one for when it's not.

Instead of duplicating the checks, add a deferred_pages_enabled() helper
and use it in a single should_skip_kasan_poison() definition.

Also move should_skip_kasan_poison() closer to its caller and clarify all
conditions in the comment.

With CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE enabled, string functions will also perform
dynamic checks using __builtin_object_size(ptr), which when failed will
panic the kernel.

Because the KASAN test deliberately performs out-of-bounds operations,
the kernel panics with FORTIFY_SOURCE, for example:

Fix it by also hiding `ptr` from the optimizer, which will ensure that

07f1b24714 UPSTREAM: lib/stackdepot: always do filter_irq_stacks() in stack_depot_save()
The non-interrupt portion of interrupt stack traces before interrupt
entry is usually arbitrary.  Therefore, saving stack traces of
interrupts (that include entries before interrupt entry) to stack depot
leads to unbounded stackdepot growth.

As such, use of filter_irq_stacks() is a requirement to ensure
stackdepot can efficiently deduplicate interrupt stacks.

Looking through all current users of stack_depot_save(), none (except
KASAN) pass the stack trace through filter_irq_stacks() before passing
it on to stack_depot_save().

Rather than adding filter_irq_stacks() to all current users of
stack_depot_save(), it became clear that stack_depot_save() should
simply do filter_irq_stacks().

b8494b6692 UPSTREAM: kasan: fix quarantine conflicting with init_on_free
KASAN's quarantine might save its metadata inside freed objects.  As
this happens after the memory is zeroed by the slab allocator when
init_on_free is enabled, the memory coming out of quarantine is not
properly zeroed.

This causes lib/test_meminit.c tests to fail with Generic KASAN.

Zero the metadata when the object is removed from quarantine.

96ac8b3213 BACKPORT: kasan: add ability to detect double-kmem_cache_destroy()
(Backport: adjacent lines changed in kmem_cache_destroy.)

Because mm/slab_common.c is not instrumented with software KASAN modes,
it is not possible to detect use-after-free of the kmem_cache passed
into kmem_cache_destroy().  In particular, because of the s->refcount--
and subsequent early return if non-zero, KASAN would never be able to
see the double-free via kmem_cache_free(kmem_cache, s).  To be able to
detect a double-kmem_cache_destroy(), check accessibility of the
kmem_cache, and in case of failure return early.

While KASAN_HW_TAGS is able to detect such bugs, by checking
accessibility and returning early we fail more gracefully and also avoid
corrupting reused objects (where tags mismatch).

A recent case of a double-kmem_cache_destroy() was detected by KFENCE:

ac3107b46a UPSTREAM: kasan: test: add globals left-out-of-bounds test
Add a test checking that KASAN generic can also detect out-of-bounds
accesses to the left of globals.

Unfortunately it seems that GCC doesn't catch this (tested GCC 10, 11).
The main difference between GCC's globals redzoning and Clang's is that
GCC relies on using increased alignment to producing padding, where
Clang's redzoning implementation actually adds real data after the
global and doesn't rely on alignment to produce padding.  I believe this
is the main reason why GCC can't reliably catch globals out-of-bounds in
this case.

Given this is now a known issue, to avoid failing the whole test suite,
skip this test case with GCC.

68b8082163 UPSTREAM: mm: defer kmemleak object creation of module_alloc()
Yongqiang reports a kmemleak panic when module insmod/rmmod with KASAN
enabled(without KASAN_VMALLOC) on x86[1].

When the module area allocates memory, it's kmemleak_object is created
successfully, but the KASAN shadow memory of module allocation is not
ready, so when kmemleak scan the module's pointer, it will panic due to
no shadow memory with KASAN check.

    kasan_module_alloc
      kmemleak_ignore

Note, there is no problem if KASAN_VMALLOC enabled, the modules area
entire shadow memory is preallocated.  Thus, the bug only exits on ARCH
which supports dynamic allocation of module area per module load, for
now, only x86/arm64/s390 are involved.

Add a VM_DEFER_KMEMLEAK flags, defer vmalloc'ed object register of
kmemleak in module_alloc() to fix this issue.

With HW tag-based kasan enable, We will get the warning when we free
object whose address starts with 0xFF.

It is because kmemleak rbtree stores tagged object and this freeing
object's tag does not match with rbtree object.

In the example below, kmemleak rbtree stores the tagged object in the
kmalloc(), and kfree() gets the pointer with 0xFF tag.

Call sequence:
    ptr = kmalloc(size, GFP_KERNEL);
    page = virt_to_page(ptr);
    offset = offset_in_page(ptr);
    kfree(page_address(page) + offset);
    ptr = kmalloc(size, GFP_KERNEL);

A sequence like that may cause the warning as following:

 1) Freeing unknown object:

    In kfree(), we will get free unknown object warning in
    kmemleak_free(). Because object(0xFx) in kmemleak rbtree and
    pointer(0xFF) in kfree() have different tag.

 2) Overlap existing:

    When we allocate that object with the same hw-tag again, we will
    find the overlap in the kmemleak rbtree and kmemleak thread will be

bd28b243c5 UPSTREAM: arm64: mte: change PR_MTE_TCF_NONE back into an unsigned long
This constant was previously an unsigned long, but was changed
into an int in commit 433c38f40f ("arm64: mte: change ASYNC and
SYNC TCF settings into bitfields"). This ended up causing spurious
unsigned-signed comparison warnings in expressions such as:

(x & PR_MTE_TCF_MASK) != PR_MTE_TCF_NONE

Therefore, change it back into an unsigned long to silence these
warnings.

Intentional overflows, as performed by the KASAN tests, are detected at
compile time[1] (instead of only at run-time) with the addition of
__alloc_size.  Fix this by forcing the compiler into not being able to
trust the size used following the kmalloc()s.

0c32aa8a23 UPSTREAM: kasan: test: add memcpy test that avoids out-of-bounds write
With HW tag-based KASAN, error checks are performed implicitly by the
load and store instructions in the memcpy implementation.  A failed
check results in tag checks being disabled and execution will keep
going.  As a result, under HW tag-based KASAN, prior to commit
1b0668be62 ("kasan: test: disable kmalloc_memmove_invalid_size for
HW_TAGS"), this memcpy would end up corrupting memory until it hits an
inaccessible page and causes a kernel panic.

This is a pre-existing issue that was revealed by commit 285133040e
("arm64: Import latest memcpy()/memmove() implementation") which changed
the memcpy implementation from using signed comparisons (incorrectly,
resulting in the memcpy being terminated early for negative sizes) to
using unsigned comparisons.

It is unclear how this could be handled by memcpy itself in a reasonable
way.  One possibility would be to add an exception handler that would
force memcpy to return if a tag check fault is detected -- this would
make the behavior roughly similar to generic and SW tag-based KASAN.
However, this wouldn't solve the problem for asynchronous mode and also
makes memcpy behavior inconsistent with manually copying data.

This test was added as a part of a series that taught KASAN to detect
negative sizes in memory operations, see commit 8cceeff48f ("kasan:
detect negative size in memory operation function").  Therefore we
should keep testing for negative sizes with generic and SW tag-based
KASAN.  But there is some value in testing small memcpy overflows, so
let's add another test with memcpy that does not destabilize the kernel
by performing out-of-bounds writes, and run it in all modes.

stackdepot's memory allocation behaviour, in case stackdepot runs out of

passing can_alloc==false to __stack_depot_save() prohibits this, at the
cost of more likely failure to record a stack trace.

PROVE_RAW_LOCK_NESTING is pointing out that (on RT kernels) the locking
rules are being violated.  More generally, memory is being allocated
from a non-preemptive context (raw_spin_lock'd c-s) where it is not
allowed.

To properly fix this, we must prevent stackdepot from replenishing its
"stack slab" pool if memory allocations cannot be done in the current
context: it's a bug to use either GFP_ATOMIC nor GFP_NOWAIT in certain
non-preemptive contexts, including raw_spin_locks (see gfp.h and commit
ab00db216c).

The only downside is that saving a stack trace may fail if: stackdepot
runs out of space AND the same stack trace has not been recorded before.
I expect this to be unlikely, and a simple experiment (boot the kernel)
didn't result in any failure to record stack trace from insert_work().

The series includes a few minor fixes to stackdepot that I noticed in
preparing the series.  It then introduces __stack_depot_save(), which
exposes the option to force stackdepot to not allocate any memory.
Finally, KASAN is changed to use the new stackdepot interface and

66e9a38702 UPSTREAM: arm64: Track no early_pgtable_alloc() for kmemleak
After switched page size from 64KB to 4KB on several arm64 servers here,
kmemleak starts to run out of early memory pool due to a huge number of
those early_pgtable_alloc() calls:

  kmemleak_alloc_phys()
  memblock_alloc_range_nid()
  memblock_phys_alloc_range()
  early_pgtable_alloc()
  init_pmd()
  alloc_init_pud()
  __create_pgd_mapping()
  __map_memblock()
  paging_init()
  setup_arch()
  start_kernel()

Increased the default value of DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_MEM_POOL_SIZE by 4 times
won't be enough for a server with 200GB+ memory. There isn't much
interesting to check memory leaks for those early page tables and those
early memory mappings should not reference to other memory. Hence, no
kmemleak false positives, and we can safely skip tracking those early
allocations from kmemleak like we did in the commit fed84c7852
("mm/memblock.c: skip kmemleak for kasan_init()") without needing to
introduce complications to automatically scale the value depends on the
runtime memory size etc. After the patch, the default value of
DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_MEM_POOL_SIZE becomes sufficient again.

54e74987ed UPSTREAM: kasan: Extend KASAN mode kernel parameter
Architectures supported by KASAN_HW_TAGS can provide an asymmetric mode
of execution. On an MTE enabled arm64 hw for example this can be
identified with the asymmetric tagging mode of execution. In particular,
when such a mode is present, the CPU triggers a fault on a tag mismatch
during a load operation and asynchronously updates a register when a tag
mismatch is detected during a store operation.

Extend the KASAN HW execution mode kernel command line parameter to
support asymmetric mode.

MTE provides an asymmetric mode for detecting tag exceptions. In
particular, when such a mode is present, the CPU triggers a fault
on a tag mismatch during a load operation and asynchronously updates
a register when a tag mismatch is detected during a store operation.

Add support for MTE asymmetric mode.

Note: If the CPU does not support MTE asymmetric mode the kernel falls
back on synchronous mode which is the default for kasan=on.
